....put your left hand in and shake it all about

So my parents are here this week, my dad has a business meeting in Mystic which isn't too far away and they got here today. We went out to dinner tonight and when we got home, while Heather was attempting to calm down a screaming Ethan upstairs, the rest of us were downstairs just making some light conversation. The conversation topic was, of course, Ethan and my Dad mentioned how he noticed that Ethan was right-handed. From there, the conversation turned to how smart and good for brain development teaching your kid to be ambidextrous was and from there it went to when my Dad broke his right arm about 2 or so years ago and his struggle to do everyday things with his left hand. This got me to thinking, it IS tough to do everyday things with your opposite hand. SOOOOO....i decided from here on out, i'm going to train myself to use my left hand. I'm just thinking ahead to if i ever break my right arm. I haven't ever broken a bone, so it's bound to happen sometime, and it'd be just my luck that it'd be my right arm, so i'm just staying ahead of the game really. Initially i thought it wouldn't be so bad, but let me tell you, it's tougher than it looks. Your too hands may look identical, but my left hand/arm seems to have a mind of it's own. I started off my lefty training by brushing my teeth tonight with my left hand, and by the end, my hand was starting to cramp up. It was an altogether rather awkward experience, because not only did i have to focus really really hard to make my left hand do what it was suppose to and face the occuring hand-cramp, but i had no idea what to do with my right arm. It felt awkward just sitting there by my side, so i put it on the counter, and then i tried putting it on my hip, but alas, nothing felt comfortable. So this process of becoming a lefty will be a long and difficult one but i'm determined to become partially ambidextrous. Tomorrow, my left hand is going to take on combing my hair and tying my shoelaces (and attempt again at brushing my teeth!) Wish me luck.
